Prussian Royal Palaces

The Prussian Palaces and Gardens Foundation Berlin-Brandenburg is currently responsible for more than 30 publicly accessible museum palaces, dating from nearly four centuries, which are embedded in historical park complexes. The world renowned Sanssouci Palace in Potsdam and Charlottenburg Palace in Berlin are included among these.

A visit to any of the palaces and gardens, most of which are included on the UNESCO World Heritage List, provides a fascinating and simultaneously unforgettable yoyage back in time to the brilliance of Prussia.

Charlottenburg Palace and Garden

Charlottenburg Palace may be counted among the emblems of Berlin. The most beautiful and the largest extant Hohenzollern residence was built as the summer home of Sophie Charlotte, who gave the palace and the location their names. Various sections of Charlottenburg Palace can be visited: the Old Palace with its magnifi cent, luxurious Baroque halls and the well-known Porcelain Chamber, as well as the New Wing, which Frederick the Great had built in 1742. The Mausoleum, the Belvedere with its worldrenowned collection of royal Prussian porcelain (KPM), as well as the New Pavilion are located within the famous palace gardens.

Opening Hours:
Old Palace : Open year-round, Tuzes.-Sun.
New Wing: Open year-round, Wed.-Mo.

World cultural heritage

In Potsdam, the Royal Seat of the Brandenburg-Prussian rulers, master builders and artists created a fascinating ensemble of palaces, parks and gardens in the space of only three centuries. The initial ideas on incorporating the surrounding lakes and hills into the future picture of the city were already developed during the construction of the Potsdam City Palace (1662-1669).

However, it was not until the 19th century that the idea of Potsdam as a "paradise isle" became a reality, thanks to the landscape architect Peter Joseph Lenné. He united the various palaces and parks into a unique park landscape which was designated as a "world cultural heritage site" by UNESCO in 1990.

A Refuge on the Vineyard
No other palace is so closely tied to the personality of Frederick the Great as Sanssouci Palace. The name Sanssouci – without cares – should be understood as the desire and leitmotif of the king, because it was here that he most gladly retreated. His summer residence was his favorite location and an important refuge for him during diffi cult times. The situation of the palace on the famous vineyard terraces and the originally preserved 18th century interior decoration allow today´s visitors to delve into the world of the philosopher of Sanssouci. Combine your visit to Sanssouci Palace with a viewing of the New Chambers and the Picture Gallery.
